APPLICATION
The Brazilian Academy of History and Literature (ABHL) maintains an open and permanent call for applications to its International Membership – Corresponding Fellow, a category designed to welcome non-Brazilian intellectuals and professionals residing outside Brazil whose work aligns with the Academy’s mission, values, and fields of knowledge.
The International Membership was established to strengthen ABHL’s global academic and cultural presence, recognizing individuals whose intellectual, scientific, artistic, or professional trajectories contribute meaningfully to the advancement of knowledge, critical thought, and cultural dialogue across borders.
Admission as an International Corresponding Fellow represents a formal institutional recognition of intellectual merit, professional consistency, and ethical commitment to knowledge as a civilizational value. It is not based on nationality, institutional affiliation, or geographic proximity to Brazil, but on the quality, coherence, and relevance of one’s work in dialogue with History, Literature, Arts, Sciences, and Culture.
International Members collaborate with ABHL through research, publications, academic exchange, cultural initiatives, and interdisciplinary dialogue, contributing to one of the Academy’s fundamental purposes: the dissemination of knowledge as legacy.
This membership category reflects ABHL’s understanding that knowledge flourishes through plurality, dialogue, and international exchange, reinforcing the Academy’s role as a bridge between intellectual traditions, cultures, and experiences.

FAQ — International Membership (Corresponding Fellow)
Who can apply?
Non-Brazilian individuals residing outside Brazil whose trajectory aligns with ABHL’s academic-cultural mission and fields of knowledge.
Is Brazilian nationality required?
No. This category is specifically for foreign nationals (non-Brazilian).
How is this different from ABHL “Academic Member” and “Corresponding Member”?
• Academic Member: for Brazilians residing in Brazil (domestic membership category).
• Corresponding Member: for Brazilians residing outside Brazil (diaspora category).
• International Member (this process): for non-Brazilians residing outside Brazil (global category).
Do I need formal academic degrees (BA/MA/PhD) to be eligible?
Not necessarily. ABHL values verified production and trajectory quality: consistency, ethics, impact, and contribution are evaluated alongside (or even beyond) titles and diplomas.
What should I submit to strengthen my application?
Clear evidence: publications, research outputs, books, portfolios, institutional profiles, official links, awards, and/or recognized professional records—anything that supports verifiability and authorship.
Can ABHL request additional documents? Why?
Yes—when needed to protect institutional reputation, member safety, and process integrity.
What leads to denial?
Examples include: insufficient evidence of trajectory, weak alignment with mission, inconsistency between claims and documentation, or integrity concerns (e.g., plagiarism, falsification, material omissions).
If my application is denied, can I reapply?
Often yes. ABHL may recommend reapplication when documentation can be improved or a trajectory becomes more consolidated.
When is payment required?
Only after approval and formal acceptance. There is no fee during evaluation.
What is the Institutional Fee for?
It is associated with institutional certification, official registration, and administrative processing after approval and acceptance.
Am I required to participate in ABHL activities after admission?
No legal obligation exists; participation is a moral and intellectual commitment, based on availability and interest in contributing to ABHL’s mission and thematic areas.
Can I apply to multiple membership processes simultaneously?
No. Applicants may be in only one active membership process at a time.
What kinds of themes and areas does ABHL embrace?
ABHL’s intellectual life spans multiple areas (e.g., language and literature, history and memory, arts, education, sciences, technology, governance, economy, communication, community action, and more), welcoming interdisciplinary work.
